How a popular aquarium fish from the other side of the planet became the Atlantic and Caribbean's most destructive invasive species.
Red lionfish (Pterois volitans) and their close relative the devil firefish (Pterois miles) are native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific — from the Red Sea and East Africa to Australia and southern Japan. There, lionfish have coexisted with reef ecosystems and predators for millions of years, and their populations stay in balance.
In the Atlantic and Caribbean, none of that history exists. Native reef fish never evolved to recognize lionfish as a threat, and nothing in these waters has evolved to hunt them back.
Venomous, not "poisonous." Lionfish carry venom in up to 18 needle-like dorsal, pelvic, and anal spines. A sting is extremely painful to humans but not typically lethal — and, importantly, the venom is destroyed by heat, which is why properly cleaned and cooked lionfish is completely safe to eat.
Lionfish are strikingly beautiful, which made them a popular species in the marine aquarium trade beginning in the 1980s. The leading scientific explanation for their arrival in Atlantic waters is repeated, small-scale releases of aquarium-kept lionfish into the ocean off South Florida — whether from hobbyists no longer able to keep an increasingly large and venomous fish, or from accidental release. A commonly cited example is the destruction of a Florida aquarium during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, though researchers believe releases both before and after that event contributed to the founding population.
Lionfish are first documented off the coast of Florida.
Populations quietly establish and begin expanding along the southeastern U.S. coast.
Lionfish spread rapidly through the Bahamas, the wider Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico, aided by strong reproductive rates and ocean currents that carry their larvae long distances.
Confirmed sightings reach Central America, including Panama's Caribbean coast and Bocas del Toro, as well as south to Colombia and Venezuela.
Lionfish now inhabit reefs, wrecks, mangroves, and even brackish estuaries from Rhode Island to Brazil, and east to Bermuda — one of the fastest marine invasions ever recorded.
